The search landscape is shifting rapidly. Consumers and B2B buyers are increasingly using AI agents like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity not just to research, but to find specific products and make purchasing decisions. If your e-commerce store is only optimized for traditional Google Search (SEO) and not for Artificial Intelligence Optimization (AIO), you are becoming invisible to a massive, high-intent segment of the market.
Unlike traditional search engine crawlers that index HTML and keywords, AI agents look for structured, easily digestible data to feed their Large Language Models (LLMs).
Here is a step-by-step technical guide to test your current AI visibility and configure your WooCommerce store to be easily readable by AI shopping agents.

Step 1: Test Your Current AI Accessibility

Before making changes, you need to know if AI bots are currently blocked by your server firewalls, Cloudflare rules, or robots.txt configurations. Many default security setups inadvertently block the user agents used by OpenAI and Anthropic.

How to test your store:

  1. Navigate to the Signum AI Checker at https://signum.ai/ai-checker/.
  2. Enter your primary WooCommerce store URL or a specific product page URL.
  3. The tool will simulate requests from the most common AI bots (like OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot).
  4. Analyze the results: If you see “Blocked” or “403 Forbidden” errors, your server’s scraping protection is preventing AI from reading your products.

Step 2: Add an llms.txt File Using RankMath

Just as a robots.txt file gives instructions to search engines, the newly adopted llms.txt standard provides AI models with a streamlined, markdown-formatted directory of your site. It tells the AI exactly what your business does and where to find the most important data, skipping the bloated HTML.
If you are a FinestShops’s client, the premium RankMath SEO Pro plugin is already installed in your store at no additional charge.
Use it to ensure AI bots can find your LLM file.

How to implement it:

  1. Create the File: Create a simple text file named llms.txt.
  2. Structure the Content: Use Markdown to describe your store. A standard e-commerce llms.txt should include:
    • Title & Description: Your brand name and a short summary of what you sell.
    • Product Categories: Markdown links to your main WooCommerce category pages.
    • Documentation: Links to your shipping policies, return policies, and FAQs.
  3. Upload to Root: Upload the llms.txt file to the root directory of your WordPress installation (e.g., yourstore.com/llms.txt) via SFTP or your hosting file manager.
  4. Point AI to the File via RankMath:
    • Go to your WordPress Dashboard.
    • Navigate to RankMath SEO > General Settings > Edit robots.txt.
    • Add the following lines to explicitly allow AI bots and point them to your new file:
      User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
      Allow: /
      User-agent: ClaudeBot
      Allow: /
      # AI Directory
      Allow: /llms.txt
    • Save the changes.

Step 3: Serve Markdown Data for AI Agents in WooCommerce

When ChatGPT or Perplexity crawls a URL, they strip away the CSS and JavaScript to read the underlying text. If your product pages use complex page builders that generate messy, nested HTML, the AI agent struggles to extract the product specifications, price, and description.
LLMs natively “think” and output in Markdown. Providing a clean Markdown version of your product pages drastically increases the likelihood that an AI will understand and recommend your products.

How to optimize WooCommerce for Markdown reading:

Semantic HTML Formatting: Ensure your WooCommerce product descriptions use strict, semantic HTML. Use proper tags for specification headers,  and for feature lists, and for key benefits. Semantic HTML translates perfectly into Markdown when parsed by an AI bot.
Expose a Markdown API Endpoint (Advanced): For maximum AI visibility, you can expose a custom REST API endpoint that outputs pure Markdown.
  • You can utilize a lightweight snippet in your functions.php or a custom plugin to register a new route (e.g., [yourstore.com/wp-json/ai/v1/product/](https://yourstore.com/wp-json/ai/v1/product/){id}).
  • Make this endpoint query the WooCommerce product data, strip all HTML tags using a Markdown converter library, and return a clean .md structured response containing the Title, Price, Stock Status, and Description.
  • Add the link to this API endpoint in your llms.txt file so AI agents know exactly where to pull your live catalog data.
